Don’t fear the flank steak! I had to talk my bro into buying this inexpensive cut of meat for fajitas a couple of years ago… But it was a friend of mine (Katherine, sup girl!) who started me buying it. Lots of people think it’s gonna be a stringy piece of meat. But if you [...]

Slow Cooker Spicy Chicken and Rice

Okay, my posts have gotten a bit shorter. But there’s a good reason for that. My time has gotten shorter, too! And I figure if my time is shorter, then other people are probably short on time, too. Since, you know, I only have the one kid, and/or I don’t work full time. So hopefully [...]

Black Bean Hotcakes

These black bean cakes reheat very easily (just keep the toppings separate. And if you put enough lime juice in your guac, it will keep in the fridge for a day or two without browning.) I don’t think Chris quite wrapped his head around the whole “savory pancake” concept, but he loves the sweet stuff. But I think these are a filling, tasty veggie dish, and might be good with leftover bacon or ham in them, too – if you’ve fallen off the veggie wagon, as I did!

This post features two vintage pics! Whoopee! Check out my growth as a photographer…
When I was at Hull House, I worked with a lot of cool people. It almost made it okay that the president’s secretary was an out-of-hand, psychotic bitch who would forget that she asked you to do something, and then scream at [...]

Fish Tacos

Chris and I both love fish tacos, so I tried making them at home for the first time. I had some frozen cod, courtesy of Market Day, and I decided to use that.
First I thawed out the fish. The Market Day cod kind of comes in these little log shapes, so while they were defrosted [...]

Katie, Kaci, Jen and I had an evening in Portland that I haven’t documented, at a restaurant called Ten01 downtown… But unfortunately, none of my pictures turned out (left the good camera at home, again.) Still, not much of a loss there… I didn’t think the food was that noteworthy. My foie gras and my [...]

Well, hello there!! I’ve been gone for over a week… But I have a really good excuse. I’ve actually been gone – I went to Portland, Oregon to see some friends for five glorious days. I did a lot of second-hand (and for that matter, first-hand) shopping, and a LOT of eating. I had to [...]

Fredbangers Bowl

A friend of mine has a policeman for a boyfriend… I don’t know why it is, but cops and firemen seem to make the best chili in the world. After some begging on my part, he gave me the recipe for his chili (he calls it “Fred’s Bangin’ Chili.”) He is a super-nice guy, and [...]

Today I thought I would begin with pictures of a very special man: Chris’ Nonno (grandpa). His name is Irio. He lives with Chris’ parents, in his own little “apartment” in the downstairs area, with his own kitchen. He is adorable. Enjoy him:
My husband’s Nonno (though I call him that, too) is almost 88 years [...]

Devil Tongues

I’ve become fascinated, over the last year or two, with dipping various things in chocolate. It started with a friend at my old job (her name is also Gina) that brought in these no-bake cookies. She frosted one Ritz cracker with marshmallow fluff, one with a thin layer of peanut butter, and made a sandwich [...]
