Baba Ghanoush

October 1st, 2009 · No Comments · Middle Eastern, appetizers, beans, dips, eggplant, food, leftovers, quick, sides, tofu, value, vegetables, vegetarian

Baba ghanoush is an Arabic dip made from eggplant that I’m thinking most of us have had by now. Don’t worry if you can’t pronounce it. Just make it, and eat it.

I’ve purchased baba ghanoush in a can that was, believe it or not, fairly decent. But it is so inexpensive to make, like, a [...]

Black Bean Hotcakes

May 25th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Latino, avocados, bacon, beans, celebrities, dips, food, leftovers, pork, sauces, vegetables, vegetarian

These black bean cakes reheat very easily (just keep the toppings separate. And if you put enough lime juice in your guac, it will keep in the fridge for a day or two without browning.) I don’t think Chris quite wrapped his head around the whole “savory pancake” concept, but he loves the sweet stuff. But I think these are a filling, tasty veggie dish, and might be good with leftover bacon or ham in them, too – if you’ve fallen off the veggie wagon, as I did!

Country Steak and Beef Stroganoff

March 26th, 2009 · No Comments · beef, celebrities, dips, leftovers, mushrooms, pasta, potatoes, sauces, sides, slow cooking, soul food, value, vegetables

I saw Alton Brown make country-style cube steak, and I had to get me some of that.

I altered his recipe a little. What I was really in the mood for were some mushrooms. Also, I don’t yet have a dutch oven (but I have an Amazon rewards coupon currently burning a hole in my pocket). [...]

Now that I’ve posted about baking something from scratch (even if I didn’t do the cooking), I have to post about something simple to make, or I may end up with a rash. And, eyw, no one wants that.

When I was a freshman in college (age 19, I think), my friend Brooke would also be [...]

Widmer Brothers Brewing

On my Friday night in Portland Jen and Katie and I went out in search of some later-evening eats. We had spent a bit longer at Jen’s house than we had intended, due to some unexpected “shopping” we did there. Katie spied a box full of clothing that Jen had, and immediately was all over [...]

My First Hollandaise Sauce, and Chicken Cordon Bleu Roll-Ups

August 21st, 2007 · 8 Comments · French, cheese, chicken, dips, eggs, fancy, food, ham, mozzarella, pork, prosciutto, sauces, vegetables

And it was good!

I was inspired by this post on the Home Cook’s blog to do another chicken roll-up with a creamy, lemony sauce. Theirs looked awesome, but I wanted just a straight hollandaise on this particular day. So I went hunting of the FoodTV site, and I found one by Tyler Florence that calls [...]

Christl's German Inn

Some time ago, Chris and I attended the First Annual Chicago Alefest, as you may or may not remember. (I know I remember very little of it. Ahem.) Anyhoo, after we had sat on the steps for a bit and sobered up a mite (he more so than me), we realized that what would make [...]

Summer and a Cup of Cheese Sauce

Been a busy few days with no time to post… Ended a run of “Oliver!” and had mom here for the weekend. Took a lot of pictures, though! I have quite a bit in the hopper, and there will be more posts to come in the next couple of days.
For today, I am still a [...]

Mediterranean-Style Grilled Chicken

August 2nd, 2007 · 2 Comments · BBQ, Greek, Indian, Middle Eastern, appetizers, breads, chicken, dips, food, quick, sandwiches, sides

We made this chicken again (oh, a hundred times since, I’d say), and I’ve posted it before… But I thought the picture in this instance really showcased the improvement in my photography skills, so I’m posting it again. Enjoy.

Served with hummus and whole-wheat pitas, which on their own are becoming my favorite snack…

Coconut Chili and Bean Medley

July 31st, 2007 · 2 Comments · Indian, Middle Eastern, Thai, asian, beans, dips, eggplant, food, leftovers, nuts, potatoes, quick, rice, sauces, sides, vegetables, vegetarian

Here’s something I experimented with the other night that came out quite good. It has a sweet and spicy, vaguely eastern flavor due to the light coconut milk and seasonings. I’ve been playing with coconut milk a lot since tasting Thai curry a few years ago, and this is another of my variations.

Sauté half of [...]
